Nichols’ muse is a bizarre pop/outsider hybrid, recalling everyone from Tracey Trance to Big Star at various moments. Their sound immediately strikes one’s ear as brimming with the anarcho-squeak-aggression of Switzerland’s Kleenex, but that’s just the initial impression. The feel of this session is more tempered than that of their wigglesome debut LP, Jeffrey Johnson (as well as their second LP, which shall go nameless). The discordian elements of post-no-wave edge and Brooklyn basement glue party remain, but some of the looser jags have been hauled in and buffed like a fine pair of loafers. This is still definitely the sound of young people, but not in a way that grates on my old man’s sensibilities. Edition of 600 with Download Code When Don Fleming was doing the initial transfers of the tapes we’d gotten retrieved from Randy Cohen’s barn, every evening seemed to bring a new surprise. But nothing was a bigger jawdropper than the material which makes up the second LP of our Jack Ruby archival series. The central core of the album is the sixteen-and-a-half minute track, “Destroy/Lost”, recorded at the band’s rehearsal space in January ’74. Robin Hall vocalizes and Boris plays electric viola, but the bulk of the piece is screaming analog synth weirdness from Randy Cohen’s Serge Synthesizer. Lauri McNamara “Carmen Of Ohio / Older, Sicker” 7″ Lathe Edition of 20 SOLD OUT!  Inside the context of Egg Eggs, Ms. McNamara has becomes known as a utility noise-generator on several instruments. On this solo set, however, she points her ukelele in the direction of something more closely resembling the New England völk tradition, doing a few femme-voiced readymades, although by doing them on a uke she kinda subverts any real tradition we can think of. On Lizards, the local club includes Chris Weisman, Luke Csehak, Ruth Garbus, Zach Phillips, and others. More recently, however, Jo and Peter have decided to form a new trio withDanny Bissette (who’s been playing live with them), and that’s called Grape Room. Whether or not this supplants (or merely supplements) Great Valley’s existence is not immediately obvious, but we look forward to Grape Room’s purple spew.
