Mako Sica / Hamid Drake - Ronda ()

2LP Edition of 500. Included Download Code with Mail Order Copies. Co-Released w/ Astral Spirits on Cassette / Digital Tiny Mix Tapes Brilliant, inspired and somewhat surprising collaboration between Chicago’s premier free-rock trio and the truly legendary percussionist, Hamid Drake, who has played with everyone from Don Cherry to Peter Brotzmann to Lee Perry. This collusion was precipitated by Matt Jackowiak, a mutual friend, who thought a merging of their sounds might make for an ecstatic explosion. This feeling became mutual after they played a show together at Constellation. The set mixed Mako Sica tunes with improvisations that took everyone to places they hadn’t expected, and the trip was deemed an utter success. Ronda was done at two sessions, scheduled around… Read more »

Chris Corsano, Paul Flaherty - The Hated Music ()

2LP with Download Slip. Edition of 500. Cover art by Gary Panter Hard to believe it has been 18 years since this set was first issued, but that’s what the calendar says. Paul and Chris had been playing together for a while before this. I seem to recall rehearsals outdoors in Hartford beneath stretches of raised highway under construction. But that may have been Chris and Pete Nolan, back when Pete played guitar. Who can remember exactly? It’s been a long time. But I do remember we put this set together because it seemed essential to document how amazing the communication was between these two musicians, from different generations, but tuned into the same insane frequency. When we told Paul… Read more »

Faun and a Pan Flute - 2014-2016 ()

2Lp edition of 250. Includes Download slip. Release Date – August 24th – Pre-Order Available – There also on tour and they have there records with em! Although their name suggests they’re Nijinsky-obsessed acid folk wanderers, nothing could be farther from the truth. 2014-2016 is the second album by this Atlanta-based nontet, and it present a wide swathe of styles and contrasting textures that are wildly eclectic but never very acid-folky. The name stems from the fact that when the band began, some seven years ago, their line-up often changed and they tended to use a different band name every time they played a show. Faun & A Pan Flute somehow got used for a couple of shows and it… Read more »

Ned Collette - Old Chestnut ()

LP Edition of 300. Insert/ DL Included. Released with It Records (Australia) Release Date August 24th, 2018 – Pre-Order available Grant’s Farm Music Video  We were introduced to the music of Ned Collette by guitarist Julia Reidy, another Melbourne ex-pat currently based in Europe. Julia’s word is good as gravy around here, so we checked out Ned’s new work and were blown clean out of our socks. Old Chestnut is a haunting prog-folk song cycle for the ages. Ned’s approach to voice and guitar resemble various models at various times. You’ll hear smatterings of Leonard Cohen, Lou Reed, Pip Proud in lyrics and phrasing, but these are always just spices, added to the beautifully melancholic vistas Ned arrays before our ears…. Los Lichis - Dog ()

2LP with Inserts / Download PITCHFORK    SPECTRUM CULTURE    DUSTED    ROOTSWORLD This deep into the Internet Era it’s unusual to discover a weird-ass band who’ve been active and recording since the ’90s without ever appearing as a blip on any known radar screen. Yet, here are Los Lichis — a Mexican music/art collective whose recording history goes back 19 years and whose sound is as powerful and strange as any combo around. Some might suggest that Mexico is not known for its underground sonic emanations, but we’ve long dug artists like Loch Ness, Chac Mool, Lorelle Meets the Obsolete, Los Llamarada, and various improv-types we hear about from folks who tour down there. Some of Mexico’s punk and… Read more »

Orchid Spangiafora - Flee Pasts Ape Elf - OUT OF PRINT

Orchid Spangiafora - Flee Past’s Ape Elf ()

2xLP with booklet / MP3 Download Edition of 700 FOUND A BOX OF THEM. Splendid, expanded reissue of this monster album, which most people know from its placement on the NWW List. Stapleton even went so far as to name a track (“Fashioned to a Device Behind a Tree”) after a mis-hearing of one of Flee Past’s’ many memorable lines. The music has its roots in Hampshire College’s Electronic Music Studio in the early 1970s. While taking a class on Electronic Composition, Robert Carey was smitten by the potentialities lurking inside piles of reel-to-reel tape. Presented with a stack of such stuff, mostly recorded off of television, he began an epic stumble into the universe of musique concret. Carey refashioned… Read more »

MV EE Alphine

MV & EE - Alpine Frequency ()

MV & EE “Alpine Frequency” 2xLP Edition of 500 Release Date – August 4th, 2015!!! Matt Valentine and Erika Elder have been cutting new synaptic pathways through brainic underbrush since before most people became capable of breathing air. That said, their albums (many of which are CDR only issues on their own Child Of Microtones imprint) often have a specific delirious blueprint, designed to shift only a certain batch of molecules and/or air into forms that translate into music. Such is not the case with Alpine Frequency. This lazily explorative 2LP set was sewn into a whole from various tattered swathes of sound, pieced together like the jeans Neil Young wore on the cover of After the Goldrush. A Spectrasound production, AF… Read more »

Thurston Moore / John Moloney : Caught On Tape ‎– Banjaxed Blues

Caught On Tape, John Moloney, Thurston Moore - Banjaxed Blues ()

Thurston Moore / John Moloney “Banjaxed Blues” 2LP (Co-Release With Manhand) Edition of 270 The third live set by the improvising duo, Caught on Tape. Comprised of drummer John Moloney (Sunburned, Chelsea Light, Home Comfort, etc.) and guitarist Thurston Moore (Coachmen, Dapper, the Din, etc.), Caught On Tape is found here to be in both expansive and contractive modes. As always, much of the sonic structure involves head-birth/freak-register guitar rampagement running into caveman stomps head-on. But there are also reflective passages this time, such as the false bell sequence in “Banjaxed Blues” (a song title worthy of MV/EE). There’s even an actual song. Indeed, the hot run-through of “Staring Statues” (from Thurston’s ’95 solo album, Psychic Hearts) might even be enough… Read more »

Happy Jawbone Family Band - The Complete Hotel Double Tragedy

Happy Jawbone Family Band - The Complete Hotel Double Tragedy ()

Edition of 600, Includes Booklet and download. Released in foreshortened single LP format back in 2010, the new edition of this masterpiece of Brattleboro form manipulation is allowed to breathe across two full long-players, and we’re all a lot better off for it. Allowed to sprawl across a couple of albums, a booklet of text and a download card of yet another album, HJFB achieve a rare freedom here, assembling a complete imaginary universe that combines surrealist wordplay with woozy Dunedin-style form-grabs. Composed of seven (or so) people (it changes with the weather), the band seems capable of almost anything. At one moment they can be doing what sounds to be a flamenco version of the Germs’ “Lexicon Devil” then… Read more »
